学校：Bishop Druitt College（オーストラリア）

期間：５月２０日～８月９日

冬休み中にライリー君の父方の祖父母の家に行きました。祖父母の家の前にはとても広い池があり、夏になると家族で泳いだり、釣りを楽しむそうです。また庭にはレモンの木があり沢山のレモンがなっていました。僕の家には梅の木があるのですが、レモンの木はないので、温かい場所ならではなのではないかと思いました。昼食はおばあさんがサンドイッチを作ってくれました。彩り豊かな野菜が入っていてとてもおいしかったです。帰る前におじいさんがオーストラリアの杉で作った手作りの木箱を僕にプレゼントしてくださいました。日本に帰ったら大切にしたいです。おじいさんとおばあさんにとても温かく迎えてくださりとても嬉しかったです。

オーストラリアは冬に入り電気を沢山消費するようになりました。オーストラリアの物価は日本に比べて高いですが、電気代もとても高いです。お父さんにオーストラリアの電力事情を聞いたところ、火力発電が多く自国の石炭を使用してエネルギーを生み出しているとのことです。しかし脱酸素の動きが進んでいるので、多くの家庭では太陽光パネルを設置し、自然の力で発電をしています。現在太陽光パネルの買い占め等の問題があり、太陽光パネルが不足していると話していました。日本では原子力発電について問題になっていますが、オーストラリアは原子力は保有していません。それは核のゴミを安全に無害に処分できないことと、自然を大切にしたいという国民が多い事からだと説明してくれました。これからもオーストラリアの事について色々勉強したいです。

I went to Riley’s paternal grandparents’ house during winter break. There is a very large pond in front of their house, and Riley’s family enjoyed swimming and fishing in it. There was also a lemon tree in the garden with many lemons. I have a plum tree outside my house, but I don’t have a lemon tree. Riley’s grandmother made sandwiches for lunch. They were very delicious with colorful vegetables. After that, Riley’s grandfather gave me a handmade wooden box made of Australian cedar. I want to cherish it when I return to Japan. I was very happy that Riley’s grandfather and grandmother welcomed me so warmly.

Australia has started to consume a lot of electricity in winter. Prices in Australia are higher than in Japan, and electricity bills are also very high. When I asked my father about the electricity situation in Australia, he said that there are a lot of thermal power generators, and that the country’s coal is also used to generate energy. However, as the movement to reduce carbon dioxide is progressing, many households have installed solar panels to generate electricity from natural sources. Currently, there are problems such as hoarding of solar panels, and he said that there is a shortage of solar panels. Nuclear power is a problem in Japan, but Australia does not have nuclear power. He explained that this is because nuclear waste cannot be disposed of safely and harmlessly, and because many citizens want to take care of nature. I want to learn more about Australia from now on.
