This week, we had Harmony Day.
Harmony Day celebrates respect for different cultures because many people from different countries live in Australia. It is held from March 16th to March 21st. Today was Harmony Day at BDC. We could wear clothes from our own culture to school or wear orange clothes, which symbolize harmony and smooth communication with others. There was a lot of orange at school, and I saw many kinds of cultural clothing.
At the assembly, everyone was donating money, so I also donated. After that, multicultural students gave presentations in their own languages. We respected each other. Zoa also introduced Hebrew. I was able to learn about many different cultures, and it was a great experience.
At lunchtime, Zoa and her friends were selling handmade sweets. It was very crowded with many students. They were selling colorful muffins, chocolate brownies, and cookies. I bought a banana muffin and Zoa’s chocolate salami. They were very delicious. Chocolate salami is called that because it looks like salami, and I thought it was interesting.
Living in Australia, we can think more deeply about multiculturalism. I didn’t really think about it when I was in Japan. I want to learn more about it and understand it better. I think Harmony Day is a great day that helps us realize the importance of connecting with people.
今日は Harmony Day でした。オーストラリアには多くの国の人々が住んでいることから、多文化の尊重と多様性を祝う Harmony Week があります。期間は3月16日から3月21日までです。BDCでは、今日が Harmony Day とされ、自分の国の文化の服を着て登校するか、人との円滑なコミュニケーションを象徴するオレンジ色の服を着て登校します。私は私服で登校しました。学校中がオレンジ色で彩られ、さまざまな種類の衣服を見ることができました。
Assemblyの時間には、みんながお金を寄付していました。私も寄付をしました。その後、多文化の生徒がそれぞれの言語で発表を行い、互いに尊重し合いました。ゾアもヘブライ語を紹介していました。改めていろいろな国の文化や言語を知ることができ、とても良い機会になりました。
お昼になると、ゾアが所属しているクラブのみんなが手作りのお菓子を売っていました。そこは幼稚園児から高校生まで、多くの生徒で賑わっていました。カラフルなマフィンやチョコレートブラウニー、そしてクッキーなど、たくさんの種類のお菓子がありました。私はバナナマフィンと、ゾアが作っていたチョコレートサラミを買いました。本当に美味しかったです。チョコレートサラミは、見た目がサラミに似ていることからその名前がついたそうで、由来が面白いなと思いました。
こうしてオーストラリアで生活していると、日本では普段あまり意識しない多文化について深く考えることができます。もっと理解を深めたいと感じました。この Harmony Day は、人と人とのつながりの大切さを考えさせてくれる、素晴らしい日だと思いました。
