On Saturday, I attended a workshop by a contemporary dance company from New York, and in the evening I went to see their performance.
The workshop was taught by one of the dancers who performed in the show. After the warm-up, we learned part of the choreography that would be performed that day. The choreography had many complex movements, so it felt difficult at first. However, the teacher carefully explained the details such as the direction of the face, the angles of the limbs, and how to move the body. Thanks to her guidance, I gradually became able to dance it. It was challenging to match the tempo of the music with the choreography, but as we repeated it, it gradually started to come together. When the music and my movements finally matched, I felt very happy. I usually feel a little uncomfortable with contemporary dance, but thanks to the teacher, I was able to enjoy the workshop very much.
The contemporary dance performance in the evening was a mixed program of six pieces. There was a wide variety of works, including dynamic and acrobatic pieces as well as smooth, flowing choreography. The mood of the music also changed throughout the program, and there was even a bright piece that captured a New York atmosphere, which made me smile while watching. The final piece included choreography that I had learned in the workshop. Watching the dancers perform it, I could really feel the difference in movement quality and the way they used their bodies. Seeing professional dancers perform the same choreography after learning it myself was a very valuable and educational experience.
土曜日のニューヨークのコンテンポラリーダンスカンパニーのワークショップを受け、夜にそのカンパニーの公演を観に行きました。
ワークショップは公演に出演するダンサーの方が講師として指導をしてくれました。ウォームアップの後に、この日の公演で披露する振り付けの一部を習いました。振り付けは複雑な動作が多く最初は難しく感じましたが、先生が顔の向きや手足の角度、踊り方などを丁寧に細かく教えてくれました。そのお陰で徐々に踊れるようになりました。音のテンポと踊りを合わせることが大変でしたが、回数を重ねるうちに合っていき、音楽と踊りがはまったときは嬉しかったです。苦手意識のあるコンテンポラリーダンスも先生のお陰で楽しく受けることが出来ました。
夜のコンテンポラリー公演は6作品のミックスプログラムでした。ダイナミックでアクロバティックな技が多い作品やスムーズで流れるような振り付けの作品など様々でした。また曲調が一転しニューヨークの雰囲気が感じられる明るい作品もあり観ていて笑顔になりました。最後の作品はワークショップで教わった振り付けが含まれていました。ダンサーの方々が踊ると動き方や身体の使い方の違いを感じました。同じ振り付けを自分が習った後にダンサーの方々の踊りを観ることはとても勉強になりました。
