【Language school 】
This week in grammar class, we learned about sentences using “if.” On Thursday, we applied that grammar to introduce five superstitions from our own countries to each other. I chose and introduced superstitions such as sleeping with your head facing north being bad luck, or sticking chopsticks into white rice being unlucky. Among the superstitions shared by my Mexican classmate was one saying that pulling a suitcase while running at midnight on New Year’s Eve brings good luck for travel. Classmates from China and India also shared superstitions from their countries. Imagining these superstitions was really interesting. Every superstition was new to me, making it a fascinating and novel discovery.

Friday was Halloween. The house began decorating with Halloween ornaments starting from mid-October. At VAB (Ballet School), everyone attends lessons in costumes. I took the lesson wearing cow costume with my three Japanese friends. The lesson while wearing this costume was hot and I sweated more than usual. Many other students also wore handmade costumes or uniquely designed outfits. I was able to enjoy a lesson with unusual atmosphere.
Also, the children who were wearing costumes walked around the neighborhood to get candy at night. Around 5p.m., young children came to my host family’s house to say “Trick or treat.”They looked so pretty with their happy faces after getting candy. Next time, we walked around the neighborhood with Julia and my host mother. I was nervous when I rang the doorbell at first but I felt comfortable being welcomed with a smile. After that, we walked to several houses and got a lot of candy. Every home welcomed us warmly with smiles, so I felt calm and smiled naturally.
I have longed to say “Trick or treat” and get candy abroad since I was young, so I was glad it came true. I was looking forward to spending Halloween in Canada, so it was a day that became an unforgettable memory.

【語学学校】
今週の文法クラスでIfを使った文法を習いました。木曜日にはその文法を活用して自分の国の迷信を5つ紹介し合いました。私は北枕で寝ると縁起が悪いや箸を白米に刺すと不吉になるなどを選び紹介しました。メキシコ人のクラスメイトが紹介してくれた迷信の中に新年を迎える深夜0時にスーツケースを引いて走ると旅行運に恵まれると言うものがありました。他にも、中国、インドのクラスメイトからも各国の迷信の紹介があり、迷信を想像するととても面白かったです。どの国も初めて耳にする迷信で、興味深く新たな発見がありました。

金曜日はハロウィンでした。10月の中旬からハロウィンのオーナメントを飾り始める家が増えていきました。VAB(バレエスクール)ではみんな仮装をしてレッスンを受けます。私は日本人の友達3人と牛の着ぐるみを着てレッスンをしました。着ぐるみを着用したレッスンは暑くていつも以上に汗をかきました。他の生徒も手作り衣装や個性的なデザインの衣装の仮装が多かったです。いつもと違う雰囲気でレッスンを楽しむことができました。
また、夜には仮装した子どもたちがお菓子をもらいに近所を回ります。17時ごろから小さな子どもたちが”Trick or treat”と言ってホストファミリーの家にきました。お菓子をもらって嬉しそうな顔をする子どもたちがとてもかわいかったです。次にホストマザーとジュリアちゃんと一緒に仮装をして私たちが家を回りました。最初にチャイムを押して”Trick or treat”と言った時は緊張しましたが、笑顔で出迎えてもらい安心しました。その後も何軒かの家を回りお菓子を沢山もらいました。どこの家庭も温かく笑顔で迎えてくれて、心が和みこちらも自然と笑顔になれました。
海外で”Trick or treat”と言ってお菓子を受け取ることが小さい頃から憧れていたので、叶えることができ嬉しかったです。カナダでハロウィンを過ごすことを心待ちにしていたので、忘れられない思い出に残る一日になりました。
