On Wednesday, I watched a performance by the VAB students. The performance featured works created by students in the Bridge Program, a program for graduates who aspire to become professional dancers. Second-year students selected their own music and choreographed their own pieces, while third-year students not only created and choreographed their own works but also taught them to other students, who then performed them. I had seen the senior students working hard to rehearse their pieces within a limited amount of time, so I was very excited to watch the performance and see the results of their efforts.
There were a variety of styles, including classical ballet, neoclassical ballet, and contemporary dance. Even within the same style, each piece was completely different, which made the performance very enjoyable to watch. I was especially impressed by the third-year students’ works. Some pieces were performed by duets or groups of four dancers, and the formation changes and synchronized movements were particularly striking. I felt that each student had a good understanding of their own strengths and areas of expertise, and that their choreography made effective use of those qualities.
Since choosing music and creating choreography are both very challenging tasks, I thought it was amazing that the senior students were able to create and present such wonderful performances. I really admired them for that.

水曜日にVAB生徒のパフォーマンスを見ました。このパフォーマンスはブリッジプログラム(高校卒業生以上のプロを目指すためのプログラム)の2年生が自分で選曲し振り付けした作品、3年生は自分で選曲し振り付けした作品を他の生徒に教え踊ってもらうパフォーマンスでした。限られた時間の中で先輩方が作品を練習している姿を見てきたのでその発表がとても楽しみでした。
作品はクラシックバレエやネオクラシック、コンテンポラリーダンスなどがあり同じ種類でも全く違う作品で鑑賞していてとても楽しかったです。特に3年生の作品は、2人や4人で踊るものもありフォーメーションチェンジや揃った動きなどがより印象的でした。
それぞれが自分の長所や得意な分野を理解してそれを活かした振り付けだと感じました。自分で選曲し、振り付けするのはとても難しいと感じるので、このように素晴らしいパフォーマンスが出来る先輩方はかっこいいと感じました。
