On Sunday, there was an event called the “Scottish Victoria Highland Games.”
My host parents participate in the event as staff members every year. On Friday, my host father and I attended the reception party for the event. Since I had never attended a reception party even in Japan, I was a little nervous. My host father and many of the men were wearing kilts, which are traditional Scottish costumes. Usually, there are Highland dance and bagpipe performances, but there were none this time, so I was a little disappointed.

We went to the event on Sunday. There were many visitors, so it was very busy.
In the area called “Clans,” each clan had its own tent displaying traditional items and goods. My host father also had a tent for his clan, where he talked to visitors about his family history and heritage.
A Highland dance competition for children was also held at the event. The participants wore traditional Scottish clothing called “kilts” and performed light and graceful dances. They looked very cute.
There were also traditional sports competitions such as caber toss and stone put. In the caber toss, participants lift and throw a huge log, and the goal is to make it rotate once in the air and land neatly in a straight line. Stone put is known as the origin of shot put. These competitions were very powerful and exciting, and the whole venue was filled with energy and enthusiasm. There was also a bagpipe performance, which made me feel as if I were visiting Scotland. Everything I saw was new to me, and I really enjoyed experiencing it all.
After the event, I helped my host parents clean up and put everything away.
For dinner, we had haggis, one of the traditional Scottish dishes. It is made by stuffing sheep’s organs together with oats, onions, and spices into a sheep’s stomach and boiling it. When my host mother first told me what it was, I was surprised and hesitant to try it. However, when I tasted it, it was well-seasoned with spices and tasted similar to sausage, so it was actually very delicious.
It was very interesting to learn about and experience Scottish culture, which had been unfamiliar to me before. By experiencing a culture different from Japanese culture, I feel that my perspective has broadened.

日曜日、スコティッシュビクトリアハイランドゲームと言うイベントがありました。
毎年、ホストペアレントはスタッフとしてイベントに参加しているそうです。金曜日には、ホストファザーとイベントの祝賀会に出席しました。日本でも祝賀会などには参加したことが無いので少し緊張しました。ホストファザーや多くの男性はスコットランドの民族衣装であるキルトを着用していました。例年はハイランドダンスやバグパイプのパフォーマンスがあるそうですが、今回はなかったため少し残念でした。

日曜日はイベントに行きました。大勢の来場者で賑わっていました。
Clans(一族という意味)と呼ばれるエリアにはそれぞれの一族ごとにテントがあり一族ごとの伝統的な品物が置いてありました。ホストファザーも自分の一族のテントがあり来場客に家系の歴史などを話していました。
子どものハイランドダンスの大会が開催されました。出場者は伝統的な衣装”キルト”を身につけ、軽やかなステップのダンスを披露して可愛らしかったです。
他にもケーバー投げ(巨大な丸太を垂直に立てて抱え、助走をつけて空中に放り投げ、丸太が空中で一回転して自分の方へ綺麗に着地する正確さを競う)、石投げ(砲丸投げの起源となったスポーツ)などのスポーツも大会も行われていました。とても迫力があり、会場全体が盛り上がりました。また、バグパイプの演奏もありスコットランドに訪れている気分になりました。初めて見るものばかりでどれも面白く楽しめました。
イベント後は、ホストペアレントと一緒に後片付けをしました。
夕食にはスコティッシュ料理の一つハギス(羊の内臓をオート麦や玉ねぎ、スパイスなどと一緒に羊の胃袋に詰めて茹でた料理)が出ました。ホストマザーから羊の内臓の料理だと聞いた時はびっくりして食べることを躊躇しました。でも、食べるとスパイスが効いてソーセージに似た味で美味しかったです。
今まで馴染みが無かったスコットランドの文化を知り触れることが出来てとても興味深かったです。日本の文化とは異なる新しい文化に触れたことで自分の視野が広がったように思います。
