Last weekend, I went to my host student’s aunt’s birthday party! Everyone welcomed me warmly, and we watched a movie and played games together.
Even though there were things I didn’t understand and some words I couldn’t catch, whenever I asked for clarification, they kindly explained things to me. Therefore, I was able to learn new expressions and phrases. One key lesson I learnt during this experience is the importance of not being afraid to express what you’re thinking.
For example, when it comes to words, I realised that leaving unknown words unexplained isn’t helpful, so I boldly asked, “I’ve never heard that word before, what does it mean?” They kindly explained it to me in easy-to-understand English.
Also, a fun topic of conversation with my host family is the differences in accents across countries. For example, when saying “bottle of water,” my host family told me, “Airi, you have the best British English accent.” I think it’s probably because I practiced with Sofia, the ALT in Japan.
At first, the conversations with my host family were more formal, but now we often engage in casual chats and jokes, and it makes every day really enjoyable.
週末に、ホストしてくれている生徒の叔母さんのお誕生日パーティーがありました。
皆さんがとても温かく迎え入れてくださり、映画を見たりゲームをしたりしました。
わからないことや聞き取れない言葉も、聞き返すと優しく教えてくれて、新しい表現を学ぶことができました。そして今回学んだのは、「思ったことは怖がらずに伝えてみることの大切さ」です。
例えば、言葉。知らない単語をそのままにしておくのはよくないと思い、思い切って「今の単語、初めて聞きました。どういう意味ですか？」と聞いてみました。すると、とても親切に、わかりやすい英語で説明してくれました。
また、ホストファミリーとの会話でよく盛り上がるのが、国ごとのアクセントの違いです。例えば “bottle of water”。ホストファミリーには「愛梨はイギリス英語のアクセントが一番上手い」と言われました。おそらく、日本でALTのソフィアと練習していたからだと思います(笑)。
最初の頃は事務的な会話が多かったホストファミリーとも、今では雑談やジョークで盛り上がることが増えてきて、毎日がとても楽しいです。
