I went to see the Santa Claus Parade held in downtown Victoria. Many people at the venue were wearing Santa hats and Christmas costumes, and the entire area was filled with a festive holiday atmosphere. As the parade started, a variety of beautifully decorated, light-up vehicles passed by. It was dazzling and exciting to see vehicles I don’t usually get to see.There were children in costumes riding in the back of trucks, cheerfully calling out “Happy Christmas!” It was incredibly cute. There were also marching bands playing Christmas songs, as well as people performing jump-rope tricks and ball juggling. In addition, some participants were handing out candy to the children along the parade route, and the kids who received the treats looked absolutely delighted.
Watching the lively parade filled with warmth made me feel cheerful and uplifted. It was my first time seeing a Christmas parade in Canada, and it became another wonderful memory from my study abroad experience.On Saturday, we had a performance at VAB. Since the program at VAB began in September, this was our very first performance. After three months of rehearsing, the day had finally arrived to present our piece, and I felt both excited and nervous from the morning.
For ballet, I danced the role of one of the village girls from Coppélia together with my seniors and classmates. Because Coppélia is a romantic ballet, the arm movements need to be rounder and softer than usual. I’m not very good at using soft arms, so it became a really valuable opportunity to practice. Since it’s such a cheerful story, our teachers often tell us, “Smile! Smile!” During the performance, I focused on enjoying the dance myself and making sure the audience enjoyed it too, so I danced with a big smile.We performed a contemporary piece called Herd with my classmates. Our teacher told us that the choreography was inspired by strong, cool soldiers, so we practiced again and again to make sure our formations and movements were perfectly in sync. I was nervous on the day of the performance, worried that I might fall out of line, but I think I managed to stay focused and dance together with everyone. The applause and cheers felt louder than at any stage I had stood on before.After the performance, we handed out candies to the audience as a way of expressing our appreciation. When I gave them out, people said things like “Amazing,” “So great,” and “Wonderful,” and their warm words really touched my heart. My host mother and Julia also came to watch and told me, “It was exciting!” which made me very happy.
I will keep practicing so that we can present an even more polished piece at our next performance in February.

ビクトリアのダウンタウンで開催されたSanta Claus Paradeを見に行きました。パレード会場にいる多くの人たちは、サンタクロースの帽子を被ったり、クリスマスのコスチュームを着用していて、会場全体がクリスマスムードに包まれていました。パレードが始まると、ライトアップや装飾をした様々な種類の乗り物が沿道を通過しました。普段見ることのない乗り物を目の当たりにして煌びやかで華やかな気持ちになりました。車の荷台にコスチュームを着た子ども達が乗り、中から”Happy Christmas”と声を出していてとても可愛かったです。他にもクリスマスソングを奏でている音楽隊や縄跳びやボールジャグリングを披露してる人もいました。また、沿道にいる子ども達にお菓子を配っていてお菓子をもらえた子ども達はとても嬉しそうな顔をしていました。
盛り上がりを見せ温かいムードに包まれたパレードを見て晴れやかな気持ちになりました。初めてカナダのクリスマスパレードを見ることができ、またひとつ留学の思い出が増えました。

土曜日にVABのパフォーマンスがありました。9月からVABでのプログラムが始まり初めてのパフォーマンスです。3ヶ月練習をしてきた作品の発表を迎え、朝から楽しみな気持ちと緊張感がありました。バレエはコッペリアという作品の村娘を先輩方やクラスメイトと踊りました。コッペリアはロマンチックバレエなためアームスを普段より丸く柔らかく使います。私はアームスを柔らかく使うことが苦手なためとても良い練習になりました。楽しい物語なので先生方から”Smile! Smile!”と普段から言われます。本番では、自分自身が楽しみながら踊ること、お客様にも楽しんで頂くことを心掛けて、笑顔で踊りました。コンテンポラリーはHardという曲をクラスメイト達と踊りました。先生からカッコよく力強い兵士をイメージした曲だと教えていただきました。そのため列や動きが揃うようにみんなで練習を積み重ねました。本番は自分がズレないか緊張しましたが、集中力を切らさずにみんなと合わせて踊ることが出来たと思います。拍手や歓声が今まで立った舞台の中でも大きく感じました。終演後に、観に来てくださった方々にお礼の気持ちを込めて、キャンディーをお渡ししました。お渡しすると、”Amazing” や”So great” “Wonderful” と言葉をかけて頂き、その言葉の温かさが心に染み渡りました。ホストマザーとジュリアちゃんも観にきてくれ”It was exciting!”などと感想を話してくれて嬉しかったです。
次回、2月のパフォーマンスに向けてより仕上がった作品を披露できるように練習を重ねていきたいです。
