I watched the movie “THE LORD OF THE RINGS” after dinner on Saturday and Sunday. My host father introduced several movies he recommends to me, and one of them was this movie. He told me that film trilogy was directed by Peter Jackson and is based on the book of the same name.
~Synopsis~
The story is about Frodo from The Hobbit who goes on a journey with friends of various races to destroy the “One Ring,” which posses the power to destroy the world.
The movie was new to me because I have little experience watching foreign films.
The first episode we watched last week was especially appealing because of Frodo’s courage and adventurous spirit. The ending made me anticipate Episode 2, and I couldn’t wait to see what would happen next. We watched the second episode on Saturday, the last episode on Sunday. When I watched them, I had a lot of mixed emotions like melancholy, horror, and the warmth of friendship. The ending was heartwarming.
All three episodes were large-scale films showing New Zealand’s magnificent scenery, beautifully crafted with meticulous attention to details. It became one of the movies that remains in my heart. We watched the entire film with subtitles and no dubbing. I could roughly understand the story and felt it was easier to understand than before. However, there was the lines I couldn’t hear and the words I didn’t know, so I thought I wanted to understand them.

On Tuesday, it was the Canada’s holiday Remembrance Day. November 11th marks the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice Agreement ending World War I on November 11, 1918. Each year on this day, we honor and mourn the soldiers who lost their lives in war. A moment of silence is observed at 11:00 a.m., the hour the Armistice Agreement was signed.
I saw a lot of people wearing Red Poppy Badge in the city since last week. My host father also gave me a Red Poppy Badge. When I asked why people wore red poppies, they explained: “Dr. John McCrae, a Canadian army surgeon, lost a close friend during combat in Europe. After fighting ceased in Flanders, the fields were covered with red poppies. Since then, the red poppy has become a symbol of remembrance for the fallen, and people wear red poppy badges.”
On Tuesday, I attended the ceremony with my host father, mother, and Julia wearing red poppies. Many people wearing red poppies participated in the ceremony, singing songs and giving speeches. At 11:00 a.m., a moment of silence was observed. Participating in the ceremony made me realize once again the horrors of war.

土曜日と日曜日の夕食後にホストファザーと『ロード・オブ・ザ・リング』の映画を観ました。以前ホストファザーがおすすめの映画をいくつか紹介してくれて、その中の1つがこの映画です。ホストファザーは『指輪物語』という本を原作にピーター・ジャクソン監督による映画3部作だと教えてくれました。
~あらすじ~
ホビットのフロドが、世界を滅ぼす力を秘めた「一つの指輪」を破壊するため、様々な種族の仲間たちと旅をする物語です。
私は海外の映画を観た経験が少ないため、この映画はとても新鮮でした。先週観た第1話は特にフロドの勇気や冒険心が魅力的でした。第2話を期待させる終わり方で続きを早く観たくて待ち遠しかったです。土曜日に第2話、日曜日に最終話を観ました。視聴中は切なさや恐ろしさ、仲間の絆の温かさなど様々な感情が押し寄せてきました。最後はとても感動的で胸に響きました。
3話ともニュージーランドの壮大な景色が美しく細部までこだわりがつまっているスケールの大きな映画でした。私の心に残る映画の1つになりました。全編字幕付きの吹き替えなしで観ました。おおよその物語は理解でき、以前よりも聞き取りやすくなったと感じました。しかし、まだまだ聞き取れない台詞や知らない単語が多くもっと理解できるようになりたいと思いました。

火曜日はカナダの戦没者追悼記念日、休戦記念日の祝日でした。1918年11月11日に第一次世界大戦の休戦条約が結ばれたことから、毎年11月11日は戦争で亡くなった兵士に敬意を表し追悼します。休戦条約が結ばれた午前11時に合わせて黙祷を行います。
先週ごろから街中で赤いポピーのバッジを身につける人を多く見かけました。また、日曜日にはホストファザーが赤いポピーのバッジをくれました。赤いポピーを身につける理由を尋ねると、「カナダ出身の軍医ジョン・マクレイは戦闘でヨーロッパに行った際親友を亡くし、フランダースでの戦闘が止んだ後、赤いポピーの花が一面に咲いた。そのため、赤いポピーは戦死者を悼む象徴とされ人々は赤いポピーのバッジをつける」と教えてくれました。
火曜日にはホストファザー、マザー、ジュリアちゃんと一緒に赤いポピーを身につけてセレモニーに行きました。赤いポピーを身につけた大勢の人たちがセレモニーに参加して、歌や演説を行っていました。また、午前11時になると黙祷が行われました。セレモニーに参加したことにより、改めて戦争の悲惨さを実感しました。
