After dinner on Monday, I was taught by my host mother that “r”and “l”have different pronunciations. I asked her “Can I make rice?” Then she replied, ”Lice?” and pointed at her head. I couldn’t understand her gestures, but she told me that “rice is a meal and, lice are insects .” It was difficult for me to understand different pronunciations of “r” and “l”,so I couldn’t recognize the difference . Then, she taught me the difference in pronunciation as follows:
“r”→ Pronounce it by bringing your lower lip close to your upper teeth and making it vibrate.
“l”→ Pronounce it by placing your tongue against the back of your upper teeth.
English often moves the mouth and tongue differently from Japanese, so I was not used to how to pronounce these sounds. A slight difference in pronunciation makes it a different word. I want to keep in mind the difference between these two pronunciations to get closer to native pronunciation.

On Saturday, I went to the host family’s house, where I was taken care of for three weeks. The other day, when I was invited to dinner, I was looking forward to seeing them. As a token of my gratitude, I gave them some origami, which they seemed to like. I wanted to make origami with their daughters, so I brought some origami papers. I asked them to choose their favorite origami, we folded a throwing star and dress, which they wanted. The throwing star was hard because two pieces were combined, making it thick. She was not used to it but folded it very carefully and diligently. I felt the difficulty of explaining folding techniques in English. Seeing their daughter so delighted with her completed origami, I was filled with joy too.
For dinner, I was treated to tacos. As tacos were one of the host family’s favourite dishes, I was delighted to see them on the table. We enjoyed them with tortilla wraps topped with guacamole, seasoned chicken or beef, and salsa sauce. These authentic tacos were packed with the delicious flavours of vegetables and meat. During the meal, we chatted about recent events like Halloween, ballet, and Christmas. They listened patiently to my still-unfamiliar English, and I was once again struck by the warmth of my host family. It was lovely to spend time playing with their daughter again after so long, and to share meals and conversation with the family.

月曜日の夕食後、ホストマザーに”r”と”l”の発音の違いを教えてもらいました。私がホストマザーに”Can I make rice?”と尋ねたところ”lice?”と返答し、頭を指差しました。ホストマザーの身振りが理解できませんでしたが、 rice→お米、lice →シラミと言う虫のことだと教わりました。”r”と”l”の発音の違いが難しくて聞き取り分けられませんでした。するとホストマザーが発音の違いをこのように教えてくれました。
“r”→下唇を上の歯に近づけて震わせるように発音する
“l”→舌を上の歯の裏につけて発音する
英語は日本語と違って口周りや舌をよく動かすので発音の仕方が慣れず苦戦します。僅かな発音の違いで異なる言葉になります。よりネイティブの発音に近づくように２つの発音の違いを意識していきたいです。

土曜日は、短期間お世話になったホストファミリー宅へ遊びに行きました。先日、夕食の招待を受けたときから、ホストファミリーに会えることを心待ちにしていました。お礼の気持ちとして渡した折り紙を気に入ってくれたので、娘さんと一緒に折りたいと思い折り紙を持参しました。娘さんに好きな折り紙を選んでもらい、娘さんが希望する手裏剣とドレスを折りました。手裏剣は折り紙が厚いため2つを組み合わせるところが大変でした。娘さんは慣れない折り紙に苦戦しながらも一生懸命丁寧に折っていました。私は折り方を英語で伝える難しさを感じました。折り紙が完成して喜んだ娘さんの姿をみて私も嬉しい気持ちでいっぱいになりました。
夕食はタコスをご馳走になりました。タコスはこのホームステイ先の好きな料理の1つだったので食卓に並んだときは嬉しかったです。トルティーヤ生地にワカモレや味付けしたチキン・ビーフ、サルサソースをかけて頂きました。本格的なタコスは野菜やお肉の美味しさが詰まっていました。食事中は先日のハロウィンやバレエ、クリスマスなどの会話をしました。私の慣れない英語にも耳を傾けてくれて、改めてホストファミリーの温かさを実感しました。久々に娘さんと遊んだり、ファミリーと食事や会話が出来楽しい時間を過ごせました。
