On Wednesday, I saw a wild deer on the way home from ballet school. I had seen it on the road and in the house’s yard a few times. Also, squirrels sometimes climb the trees in our yard. When I saw them for the first time, I was so surprised to see wild deer and squirrels in a residential area. Then, I was also surprised that even when I passed nearby, they remained calm and showed no sign of being bothered by people. When I told my host parents, my host mother told me: “ Fawns are not very dangerous, but adult deer is dangerous. In spring, they will appear, so be careful.”
When I see an adult deer, I want to be careful enough.

【Language school】
This week, We learned about gerunds and infinitives in grammar class. I haven’t known how to use gerunds and infinitives until now; I was making decisions based on a vague sense. On Friday, we practiced speaking with classmates in a quiz format using gerunds and infinitives. Our teacher always tells us not to just end with a simple question-and-answer exchange, but to expand the conversation using the 5W1H questions. In a conversation with my Mexican classmate
“Do you want to learn a new language?”
When I asked this question,
he replied, “Yes, I want to learn Japanese.”
“Why?”
When I asked why,
“Because Japanese looks like interesting!”
he replied.
I was surprised by his unexpected answer that he wanted to learn Japanese.
I was delighted to hear that Japanese is appealing to people from overseas and that they showed interest in it. As the conversation expanded, I enjoyed getting to know the other person and being able to share about myself. It was a more fulfilling class than ever before.

水曜日、バレエスクールからの帰り道に野生の鹿を見ました。以前も道路や家の庭で何度か見かけることがありました。また、家の庭の植木に時々リスが登っていることもあります。初めて見たときは野生の鹿やリスが普通に住宅街いることにとても驚きました。そして、近くを通っても穏やかで人を気にする様子もないことにもびっくりしました。ホストペアレントに話すと「子鹿はそこまで危険ではないけど、大人の鹿は危険だよ。春になると現れるから気をつけてね。」と教わりました。大人の鹿を見かけたときは十分に気をつけたいです。

【語学学校】
今週は文法の授業で動名詞と不定詞を習いました。私は今まで動名詞と不定詞の使い方が分からないまま、なんとなくの感覚で判断していました。授業で先生が動名詞と不定詞の判断を問題を解きながら教えてくれました。２つの使い分けが理解出来た時はスッキリしました。金曜日には動名詞と不定詞を使ってクラスメイトとクイズ形式で話す練習をしました。先生はよく一問一答で終わらせないで5W1Hを使って会話を広げてとみんなに伝えます。
メキシコ人のクラスメイトとの会話で
「Do you want to learn a new language?」
と質問すると
「Yes, I want to learn Japanese.」
と答えてくれました。
「Why?」
と理由を尋ねると、
「Because Japanese looks like interesting!」
と答えてくれました。日本語を習いたいと言う返答が予想外で驚きました。
海外の方から見た日本語が魅力的なことや、日本語に興味を示してくれたことが嬉しかったです。会話を広げといくと、相手を知り、自分のことを伝えられるようになり楽しかったです。今まで以上に充実した授業でした。
